Treatment will depend on your child's symptoms, age, and general health. It will also depend on how bad the condition is.
The symptoms usually last about a week. Most often, antibiotics are not needed to cure the infection. In some cases, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics to help ease symptoms and make your child feel better faster. If the doctor prescribed antibiotics for your child, give them as directed. Do not stop using them just because your child feels better. Your child needs to take the full course of antibiotics.
If your child has diarrhea, make sure they drink plenty of water. This replaces water lost in diarrhea and helps prevent losing too much water (dehydration). Oral rehydration solutions may be recommended by your child's doctor. Antidiarrheal medicine is not advised. That's because the medicines keep the bacteria in the body for a longer time.
Talk with your child's doctor about the risks, benefits, and possible side effects of all medicines.
